Ruined By The Internet?

Ever feel like the internet ruined everything?

From our mental health to our dating lives, from journalism to democracy, we blame the web for so much of what's gone wrong. But is it really the internet's fault?

Ruined By The Internet? explores common claims about the digital world, technology, and social media. Through in-depth conversations with relevant experts, we investigate the arguments, examine the evidence, and find the true casualties of the web - and the things we're just looking at wrong.

The Inspiration: A World of Digital Complaints

Everywhere I looked, people from all walks of life complained about how the internet was ruining everything - from our love lives, to our ability to focus, to society itself.

This got me wondering: Is it really that bad? This show is my attempt to find some answers through thought-provoking discussions that seek the truth behind the hyperbole.

About the Host

Gareth King

Like so many people, I've spent countless hours online - for work, for fun, for learning, and for just scrolling. Growing up before widespread internet access, I’ve seen and experienced the transition from nothing, to the absolute saturation of today.

I became fascinated by how readily we blame this unbelievably transformative technology for its ruinous effect. With a mix of scepticism and curiosity, I want to move beyond the easy 'blame game' and look at all the evidence – for better or worse.

My goal with Ruined By The Internet? is simply to put these claims to the test through nuanced discussion and critical thinking, and hopefully provide some new perspectives on our often-anxious relationships with the digital world.
